Question: I have some thawed raw shrimp in the fridge that I was originally planning to cook tonight, but I’d like to hold off until tomorrow. How long can you keep defrosted shrimp in the fridge before it goes bad?
Answer: The answer depends on how you thawed the shrimp.
You can safely keep raw shrimp that’s been defrosted in the refrigerator for an additional one to two days before cooking, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture. You can also safely refreeze the thawed shrimp within that same timeframe.
But raw shrimp that has been defrosted in the microwave or in cold water should be cooked right away. That’s because shrimp thawed under either of those methods could easily warm up to the 40°F temperature at which harmful bacteria begins to multiply rapidly, notes the USDA.
