How to Make Food Last Longer Before the Power Goes Out

Here’s a simple way to make sure your food will stay safer longer if the power goes out: keep your freezer full. Some jugs or freezer bags filled with water will do the trick.

•     If you lose power, a freezer that is half full will hold food safely for up to 24 hours.

•     But a full freezer will hold food safely for twice as long — up to 48 hours.

So to be prepared, fill up some plastic jugs or freezer bags with water and freeze.

If your power does go out, you can find out how long specific foods will stay safe here.
