Quick Tip: Keep Your Refrigerator Full to Save Energy

Here’s a simple way to save energy: keep your refrigerator full. Some jugs filled with water will do the trick.

When you open the fridge door, cold air escapes and warm air comes in. When you shut the door, your refrigerator has to go to work to cool things down again. By keeping your fridge full, there’s less air space and less cold air to be exchanged with the warm air from your kitchen. Your fridge doesn’t have to work as hard — and you save energy.

Keeping your freezer full has advantages as well. If you lose power, a freezer that is half full will hold food safely for up to 24 hours. But a full freezer will hold food safely for twice as long — up to 48 hours. Fill up some plastic jugs or freezer bags with water and freeze.
